Curriculum & Programs

American Unified School of Technology provides a State of California curriculum through a Mathematics, Science, and Technology Magnet High School Diploma Program. Courses are specially engineered to enrich learning in mathematics, science, and technology, and to strengthen English language learning.

AUSTC also provides ESL (English as a Second Language) and SAT preparation programs to its students, as well as to external students.

Traditional Program (Grades 9–12)

Students in Grades 9–12 are required to attend regular school hours and follow the traditional high school curriculum as specified by the California Department of Education.

The traditional program requires attendance and sequential successful completion of Grades 9–12 before a student is qualified to sit for the High School Exit Exam. Students who satisfy all academic requirements may apply for early graduation in accordance with LAUSD rules and regulations.

Adult Diploma Pathway

Adults who provide acceptable evidence of successful completion up to Grade 11 (or an equivalent), either in the USA or overseas, may sit for a non-official assessment to measure their readiness and ability to benefit. Successful candidates will be scheduled to join a preparation program and to sit for the High School Exit Exam and SAT.

Adult students qualify for graduation if they meet the following:

  • Successful pass of the SAT
  • Successful pass of the High School Exit Exam
  • Meeting the minimum academic requirements in accordance with LAUSD regulations

Students who do not pass all High School Exit Exam subjects will be given two opportunities during the same academic year to pass the failed subjects. If they still do not pass, they will be required to attend and retake only the failed subjects in the next academic year.

Adult students may also be given the option of external exams for failed subjects only (study at home and sit for the subject exams as scheduled).

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW MANY CLASSES SHOULD I ATTEND? WHAT'S ON THE TEST? AND WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON'T PASS CERTAIN SUBJECTS?

You will sit for an exit exam similar to that of public high schools. The SAT exam is provided in coordination with, and under the full control of, the College Board as regulated. You will be required—and will be given the opportunity—to sit for failed-subject exams during the same academic year. Failure to pass will require you to retake only the failed subjects in the next academic year.

HAVE I BEEN OUT OF SCHOOL TOO LONG?

No. Some of our assessed students have been out of school for five, ten, and even fifty years. It’s never too late to graduate.

CAN I ENROLL FOR THIS DIPLOMA IF I WENT TO SCHOOL OUTSIDE THE U.S.A.?

Yes—if you provide a transcript verifying completion of 110 credits (or more) of education through Grade 10 or above in the U.S.A. or overseas. Foreign students must sit for and pass an English Language Test before being accepted.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF A TRANSCRIPT?

A certificate is not enough. Schools and employers increasingly require a detailed transcript documenting passing grades and grade point average (GPA) for all subjects required for graduation.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET MY DIPLOMA?

Your diploma will be processed the next school day following your successful examination pass and completion of graduation requirements.

Confidentiality

All test scores, achievement levels, and assessment records remain confidential and are released to educational institutions only in accordance with applicable guidelines of the Joint Committee on Testing Practices, the National Council on Measurement in Education, and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974.

The authentic high school diploma granted to successful candidates is equivalent to the recognition of achievement afforded to all students reaching the academic level of 12th grade, 9th month.

Recipients have successfully demonstrated mastery of skills and knowledge equivalent to that required for graduation from high schools throughout America. Successful candidates earn the rights and recognition given to high school graduates. Many choose to continue education and training beyond the high school diploma in pursuit of advanced career opportunities.

All records of diploma awards remain confidential unless instructed otherwise by the graduate.

Diploma Eligibility

All successful High School Diploma candidates will have attained Skill Measurement Testing scores ranking them at the 12th grade, 9th month level in all subjects, including their essay assessment.

Assessment Evaluation

Each candidate’s academic skill levels are pre-assessed to determine their likelihood of passing (97% accurate). This is especially important for “marginal” candidates.

Detailed Transcripts

Detailed transcripts document a candidate’s academic skill level in all subjects required by the State of California for graduation. Included are national grade-level assessments, credits earned, grade point average, and national percentile ranking.

Assessment testing and grading are provided for all individuals to determine achievement at the High School level of 12th grade, 9th month.

Assessment of Writing & Communication Skills

Every High School Diploma candidate is required to submit an essay to demonstrate written communication skills.

Essays are graded and scored by a California-licensed teacher. The four grading components (as outlined by the California Education Round Table) used for essay assessment are: Detail Analysis, Content, Organization, and Language.
